World Concept

World Status

The ceasefire of 10 years ago is still in place, but has grown more shaky. Godinho has disappeared from the public eye, and the Archangels are maintaining Covenant order. But not all is well in the Terra Sphere. Most people have not noticed substantial change under Covenant, with cities still being overpopulated, wealth disparity still affecting the lives of people across Terra Sphere, and resource concerns unaddressed.

Rumors of Dominion-led violence are prevalent, though the EFF is quick to cover up any such activity. Tensions are high, and the promise of peace may break at any moment. Rebellious factions have begun cropping up, though the military is quick to stop their activities

Story Overview

History

Pre Material War- ~100 years before start of campaign

Due to population growth, dwindling resources, and a desire to mitigate existing small-scale conflict around the globe, Earth has united as the Earth Federation and is in the process of colonizing space. Conflicts regarding the unification break out between countries, but eventually the militaries of those already unified establish a united Earth Federation Force and put an end to the conflicts.

A terraformed Mars and various asteroids are being used to mine for resources necessary to continue colonizing and building space colonies. Many earth citizens have immigrated to Space. Mars is composed of mostly lower class, blue collar workers who were sent to mine it for resources, but several rich families that own the mining companies immigrated as well in order to maintain control over supply lines. The space colonies vary, but mostly well off people were able to comfortably immigrate. Space travel was also established, allowing people (with enough money) to travel between the colonies and Earth

Mech production is in its infancy, bolstered by the surge of resources coming from the mining operations. Most of what is produced is advanced forms of construction and mining equipment. Rudimentary and slightly unsafe, but an improvement on the existing tech, and necessary for mining out in space. Most mechs are produced on Earth and shipped out into space.

As colonization continued, a research base was established on the moon to study how to best utilize the limited resources, eventually coming up with methods to increase effective utilization. The creation of a superhard alloy that could be produced in the environment of space led the Earth Federation forces to begin creating proto-Lancers, enhanced mecha that could be used as tools and, more importantly, weapons. Initially they were kept secret from the public, but their existence was eventually leaked and led to widespread mistrust of the Federation within the colonies. Both Mars and the Space Colonies began to push for independence from the Federation.

Smaller fights began to grow larger as protests and more drastic pushes for independence began to break out. Control of production, supply lines, and the materials being developed for military use are the biggest concerns of the populations. The EFF having sustainable mecha production scares many colonies into action, initiating conflict with military installations on the colonies.

Material War- ~60 years before start of campaign

Support factions on Earth were swiftly crushed by the EFF. The direct action only led to more outcry though, and overtime full scale conflicts broke out as Martians and Colonists began to get their hands on proto-Lancers. The distribution of proto-lancers expands as rogue productions take EFF designs and iterate on them, leading to more widespread mech usage. Research and development leads to space-faring proto-lancers as well. Most battles involve at least one proto-lancer.

Militaries begin lancer pilot training programs. Mars and the Colonies have established industries separated from Earth and can bolster their own forces. Proto-Lancers begin to advance and become specialized war machines, officially referred to as Lancers.

Rampant and indiscriminate destruction followed suit as the war waged on. EFF forces engage with rebel forces eagerly and often. Not every engagement is an EFF victor. War becomes more deadly and more destructive. Portions of Earth are rendered inhospitable wastelands due to the conflicts, with remnants of proto-lancers and machinery littering the landscape. The current Earth population is pushed to larger, denser cities. Salvaging becomes a new, dangerous way for poor Earthlings to eke out a living.

The appearance of Covenant- 30 years before start of campaign

In response to the continued escalation, the EFF decides to make an example of one of the Space Colonies, electing for Colony D which had been producing most of the weaponry they were using.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a paramilitary organization appears and outpaces the might of the EFF tenfold. Their leader Noah Godinho, along with a team of four never-before-seen Lancers referred to as the Watchers, intervened in the EFF brutalization of Colony D and put an end to it with their sheer might. Despite the small numbers, their success comes effortlessly. Colony D was nearly razed, with thousands of casualties. But, people around the Terra Sphere saw a militia that could actually stand up to the EFF and felt hope for the first time.

After this, Godinho announces to the Terra Sphere their intent to act as the desperately needed peacekeepers between the EFF, earthlings, and colonists. This is met with a mixed response. Fear of a new, powerful organization, desperation, excitement, hope, anger, but Covenant is not deterred.

Covenant's Rise and Tragedy- ~20 years before start of campaign

Over the next 10 years, Covenant's forces and influence increased. They produce more mechs, referred to as Archangel Frames, and assign them to protect each region of the Terra Sphere. There is still widespread conflict at this time, and their intervening incites more, especially from the EFF. Fear and the desire for control prevents the fighting from ending quickly.

As Covenant, the Watchers, and the Archangels exert their pressure, conflicts begin to slowly subside. More and more supporters speak in favor of them, pressuring colony governments and the Federation to support Covenant.

The Watchers are killed in combat with unknown rebel assailants. Noah Godinho mourns them publicly, but assures the people that the rebels are nothing to fear, and the Archangels will uphold their promise to the people.

An Unsteady Peace- ~10 years before start of campaign

10 years later, the EFF accepted Covenant as the official peacekeeping organization of the Terra Sphere and a ceasefire was officially called by Covenant. Militias around the Colonies gradually become branches of Covenant, referred to as Dominions. They maintain their allegiances to their governments, whether that’s the EFF or one of the Colonies, but they report to Covenant. Small conflicts remain, but steps are taken to begin reversing the damage of the war.
